It's hard to imagine Joe
Fulmer's Stitching Post as the same company he bought in 1982. The
Centerville-based retailer, which sells Husqvarna Viking sewing
machines, designer fabrics and other sewing products, opened a
superstore in the Cross Pointe Centre in July. The 25,000-square- foot
facility carries sewing machines, fabrics, books, patterns, software and
notions. It also serves as an inventory distribution center for other
locations. |

JOE FULMER,
HEAD of the 10-store
Stitching Post chain, says the company is expected to reach $10 million
in sales this year. |
| The company, which employs
78, posted $8.3 million in 1999 sales and is expected to reach $10
million in sales this year .Stitching Post has expanded from one to 10
stores and Fulmer expects more to come on line. The company culls 92
percent of its sales from sewing machines. "That's the fun part," Fulmer
said. Fulmer's father, Darrell,
started the company in 1958. The younger Fulmer joined as a teen,
repairing sewing machines and doing odd jobs. The company consisted of a
single store and $200,000 in sales, but Fulmer planned to grow it. That
year, the Stitching Post sold a record 100 machines; in 1999, it sold
8,000 sewing machines. Fulmer said the company ranks as the world's
largest Viking retailer .
