    Figure 2

  • Print tulip appliqué patterns (PDF file) on letter size printer paper.
Do not allow printer to scale printing smaller or to fit paper.

  • Trace pattern pieces for Tulip (C) and Leaves (D, D-1, E and E-1) on paper side of fusible webbing.
  • Cut out traced fusible paper patterns with a minimum of 1/2" from the drawn pattern lines.
  • Adhere fusible webbing paper to fabric squares.
  • Cut out pattern pieces on drawn lines.
  • Position appliqué pieces (as illustrated in project photo) to Pillow Front. Adhere pieces following manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Cut two 45" x 6" strips of lime green fabric for Ruffle.

Construction:

  1. Thread machine with all-purpose thread.
  2. To create the folded ruffle, seam each 6" x 45" lime green strip together along 6" width to form a continuous circle.
  3. Fold 6" width in half to form a 3" x 90" circle. Press on folded edge.
  4. Set machine for as straight stitch with a length of 3.0.
  5. Stitch ¼" from cut edges around circle. The stitching will keep the two layers from shifting when feeding through the ruffler blades.
  6. Attach the ruffler to the machine. Set the ruffler adjustments for the desired depth and frequency of the tucks. For more information on how to set the ruffler, check the instruction sheet, included with the ruffler. The fabric needs to be gathered to approximately 48."
  7. To easily determine which settings to use on the ruffler, test with 12" strips. Settings that gather the 12" strip to approximately 6" should be used.
  8. Thread machine with green thread.
  9. Attach the open toe appliqué foot.
  10. Lay tear-a-way stabilizer on the backside of Pillow Front.
  11. Set machine for feather stitch. Adjust width to 3.0 and the length to 2.5.
  12. Stitch around the lime green Leaves (Patterns D-D1). The far right swing of the needle should come off the edge of the Leaves when stitching.
  13. Set machine for blanket stitch with a width of 3.0 and a length of 2.5.
  14. Appliqué around bright green Leaves (Patterns E-E1). The far right swing of the needle should just come off the edge of the Leaves when stitching.
  15. Thread machine with fuchsia thread and set machine for zigzag stitch with a width of 3.0 and a length of .50. Further adjustments to length may be needed according to desired satin effect.
  16. Satin stitch on black dashed lines, as indicated on Tulip Pattern Piece C.
  17. Appliqué around edges of Tulip. The far left swing of the needle should just come off the edge of the Flower.
  18. To create Stem, select a decorative stitch. Stitch from bottom edge of the Tulip down to beyond the bottom Leaves.
  19. Remove the tear-a-way stabilizer gently so that decorative stitches don't become distorted.
  20. Pin Ruffle to circumference of Pillow, matching cut edges.
  21. Select straight stitch length of 2.5. Stitch Ruffle to Pillow Front with a 1/2" seam allowance.
  22. To finish straight edges on Pillow flaps for back of Pillow, select a multi-stitch Zigzag. Set width at 5 and length at 2.0 on the machine. When stitching, the far right stitch should just fall off the fabric edge.
  23. Fold and press 1/2" of fabric backs to wrong side of flap. See line, indicated on Pattern #3.
  24. Topstitch the flap in place with a straight stitch or a decorative stitch.
  25. Pin right sides of Backs to Pillow Front. The Backs will overlap at the Center Back.
  26. Seam Backs to Front with a straight stitch at a width of 5/8."
  27. Turn pillow right side out.
  28. Optional: Heat set rhinestones may be placed on leaves and flowers for added embellishment.
